FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Mechanics' Institute, New York's oldest and most prestigious technical school, is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2007 semester. This F.A.Q. will answer your most Frequently Asked Questions and help you decide if our programs are right for you.

What programs do you offer?

We offer nearly fifty (50) different courses within the following building trades:

Architectural Drafting
HVAC Systems Design
Electrical Technology
Plumbing Design
Facilities Management
Construction Project Management
Preservations Arts Technology


What is the purpose of these classes?

Our classes are designed to upgrade and enhance the technical skills of individuals who are already working in the building trades. These classes can lead to career advancement, promotions, and even self-employment.

When are classes given?

Our Electrical Technology, HVAC Systems, and Plumbing Design programs are offered: Monday & Wednesday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Our Construction Project Management, Facilities Management, and, Historic Preservation programs are offered:
Tuesday & Thursday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, and from7:00pm to 9:00pm

Note that not every course is available in every schedule. Also note that classes fill up very quickly and the first individuals to apply have the first choice in schedules.


Who should enroll?

Anyone currently employed in the trades we offer and who is looking for career advancement, promotion, or even self-enhancement. You must be sincerely motivated and willing to do the class work required by our instructors.
Note: All training is in the classroom; there is no shop work involved in our technical training.


Who should not enroll?

Anyone who is not currently employed in the trades.
Anyone who is not seriously motivated.
Anyone who is happy now and who is not looking for advancement.
Anyone who cannot come to class on a regular basis
Anyone who cannot arrive to class on time and stay for the full 2-hour session.


When is registration?

Registration is going on now for the September 2008 semester.

What do I need to register?

All new applicants must bring the following items:

College transcript, high school diploma, or GED
Social Security card
Letter of employment describing the nature of their work
Recent pay stub from place of employment
Two current color passport-type photographs


Where is Mechanics Institute located?

Mechanics' Institute is located in the General Society's designated landmark building at 20 West 44th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
